I recently surprised my partner for his birthday with a 2 night/3 day stay on our own slice of paradise, Magnetic Island.
Our package included car hire for the duration of our stay, return ferry tickets and 2 nights staying at Amaroo on Mandalay, in Nelly Bay.
The ease of hopping on a ferry, 20 minutes later arriving into Maggie, already feeling like we're worlds away and we automatically slip into island time! We pick up our car and set off for our first local tour for the weekend.
Magnetic Island time tours offer 2 types of tours, the first being a 5 hour fishing and snorkelling tour in some secluded bays, with a couple of them only accessible by boat. We were very fortunate to have the best weather to be on and in the water, the ocean was teaming with reef fish and healthy coral systems. Our highlights were spotting leopard sharks and rays!
We then checked into our hotel room at Amaroo, the receptionist was the owner of the property and she was very welcoming, as was her little dog, Yogi and the the Macau, Ticky. There is even a massive python that lives in the reception!! Our room was comfortable, clean and quiet with being right at the back of the resort.
That afternoon we set off again for a 2 hour sunset tour with Magnetic Island time tours, where you can take your own drinks and snacks, listen to Drue's commentary and watch the sunset over the island, very relaxing and a great way to end the day.
I had made a dinner reservation for us at Saltwater, which is one of the newest alfresco, Australian fusion seafood restaurants on the island, where they source local seafood from the local fisho's . The food and service was exceptional, and we highly recommend you book a table there next time you visit, as they are always booked out due to popularity with the locals.
Waking up Sunday morning, we had a fantastic, cooked breakfast at the restaurant "up the garden path" located at the resort with pretty views from the veranda looking over the pool.
We then decided to have a game of golf at the Magnetic Island Country Club, complete amateurs, but the course itself is great and a little challenging on some holes.
Sunday afternoon I had booked a sunset sea kayak tour with Craig from Magnetic Island sea kayak touring.. this tour operates for approximately 2 hours, and it's very relaxing as you paddle in horseshoe bay with Craig sharing his local knowledge of Maggie's history with the army and forts around the area , along with his interest and connections with the Wulgurukaba people and their dreamtime stories.
Our weekends are always magical on Maggie, and we never run out of new experiences when we visit, always wishing we had just one more night! I feel very blessed to have this island on our doorstep!
