The Ghan Expedition

Two Departures: 2nd August 2023 & 23rd August 2023

Explore the wonders of Australia’s vast interior on The Ghan Expedition from Darwin to Adelaide, including extra time in both cities before and after your rail journey.

Day 1: Today you will make your own way to Darwin and check in at the Hilton Darwin for your 3 night stay with breakfast.

Day 2: Today you will join a city sights tour for the perfect introduction to Darwin, with expert commentary by a local guide. See the lush Botanic Gardens and the Chinese Temple, which was re-built after it was demolished by Cyclone Tracy in 1974. Tour the historic sites of the city including the East Point Military Precinct. See the Stokes Hill Wharf area, the Mooring Basin and Darwin Aviation Museum. There is also time available to explore the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, whose collections encompass Aboriginal art, visual arts, and Northern Territory history and natural sciences.

Day 3: Today you can spend the morning at leisure in Darwin before your Champagne Sunset Sail in the afternoon. Feel the wind and revel in the silence as we cut the motors and set the sails for an unforgettable 3 hour tropical sunset cruise on the magnificent Darwin Harbour. Authentic sailing aboard Sundancer, a 50ft ocean-going luxury catamaran designed for ultimate enjoyment and safety in tropical waters. Catering for small or large groups, our Sunset Sail offers a truly genuine sailing experience aboard a spacious comfortable vessel. With over 100 square metres of deck space there’s plenty of room to spread out in the shade of the sails, or if our warm weather gets too much retreat to the fully air-conditioned saloon- complete with espresso coffee machine! Includes Sparkling Wine & delicious tapas/bbq dinner served throughout the evening. BYO other drinks, plenty of icy-cold eskies on board.

Day 4: Your journey begins with a morning departure from Darwin. Once you’re settled into your private cabin, mingle with fellow travellers or sample the exceptional food, wine, and service onboard.  When it’s time for lunch, savour the regionally-inspired menu accompanied by a selection of all-inclusive wines and beverages, before an early afternoon arrival at the Top End township of Katherine. Take a relaxing cruise through Nitmiluk Gorge’s ancient natural wonders and exploring the region’s rich Indigenous culture. Enjoy dinner as the sun sets over the outback, then back in your cabin you’ll find your bed turned down. Fall asleep as the train rolls soothingly onwards.

Day 5: After your first night on The Ghan, you’ll be greeted by a morning view of the spectacular Red Centre. A full day of excursions awaits you in the outback town of Alice Springs. An optional upgrade is a scenic flight to Uluru, returning in time to meet the rest of your fellow guests at a spectacular barbeque dinner under a million stars at the historic Alice Springs Telegraph Station.

Day 6: From your morning stop at the outback outpost of Manguri, you’ll venture into the weird and wonderful opal mining township of Coober Pedy, where more than half of the residents live underground. Here, you’ll enjoy a day of discovery, and a gourmet lunch in the most unique of locations: underground. Dinner is served back on the train where you can enjoy a nightcap as your journey continues.

Day 7: Enjoy a leisurely brunch as you prepare for your mid-morning arrival into Adelaide. After disembarking the train, you will be transferred to the Majestic Roof Garden Hotel with breakfast for your two night stay. Afternoon can be spent exploring the city or at your leisure.

Day 8: Today is the day you've been waiting for, a Taste of the Barossa Premium Day Tour is on the agenda. This premium small group wine tasting tour offers you the perfect opportunity to experience the exquisite and stunning wineries in the Barossa Valley region. In the evening you will be staying at the Majestic Roof Garden Hotel.
